Planning Your Arrival

Planning in advance the shipping, arrival and storage of your household goods can make your move to Hawaii a lot easier.  Click on the links below for information, resources and tips that can help your family’s move a smooth one.

Household Goods

Household goods shipments for all services are handled by NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center headquartered at Pearl Harbor. Shipments can take as long as two months, so check with Army Community Services’ Lending Closet for information and request a FMWR Hospitality Kit. It is recommended you submit a counseling application as soon as you recieve your orders by logging on to www.move.mil and clicking on DPS Registration. This website has a lot of information regarding your move, and it is also used to file a claim or to submit a customer satisfaction survey.

One of the many benefits of securing an Island Palm Communities home to coincide with your arrival, is the use of loaner furniture for up to 90 days with a 90-day extension from the Army’s Housing Office. Basic items such as sofas, chairs, beds, tables, lamps and dressers, can be delivered and picked up with five days notice. Some housing offices will loan you appliances such as washers, dryers, refrigerators and stove top/oven ranges for your entire stay in Hawaii. Your Island Palm Communities Leasing Consultant can provide you with information.

Vehicle Registration

State of Hawaii

Once your vehicle arrives, you will need to register it with the State of Hawaii, Division of Motor Vehicles, Licensing and Permits. All automobiles used on the highway must be registered with the state within ten days of arrival. You may keep your original plates, but you must register to get a Hawaii vehicle sticker. Proof of ownership or a certificate of registration; shipping documents, Hawaii no fault insurance and proof of a safety inspection is required.

Safety Inspection
Hawaii requires annual safety inspections. For inspection, bring a valid identification card and a Non-resident Certificate Form to one of the state’s authorized inspection stations.

Army Installation
All drivers who live on, work on, or frequently use Army installations must register their vehicles at an Army Vehicle Registration Office and to display an official military decal on their vehicles. To register and receive a decal, drivers need to bring their current driver’s license, vehicle registration, safety inspection and proof of insurance to the Vehicle Registration Office (VRO). Motorcyclists must also show completion of a valid DoD-approved safety course.

Getting Around

If you arrive before your POV reaches Hawaii, there are a few transportation options to consider.

Nearly all major car rental companies have locations at the Honolulu International Airport as well as in Waikiki. The following are links to a few companies:

Avis

Alamo Car Rental

Budget Car Rental

Dollar Rent-A-Car

Enterprise Rent-A-Car

Hertz Rent-A-Car

National Car Rental

Thrifty Car Rental

Oahu’s city transportation system is aptly named “TheBus.” Fares are reasonable, routes are extensive and there are special visitor passes for multiple day uses. For more information on fares, bus routes to popular attractions and other useful information visit http://www.thebus.org.

Another affordable option is the trolley. The routes and destinations are not as extensive as TheBus but the trolley goes to most major visitor attractions and offer tickets for unlimited rides over a certain number of days. For more information visit http://www.waikikitrolley.com or call (808) 593-2822.

Taxis are a great way to travel when in a group and the cost can be shared. You can find taxi stands at most major shopping centers, in the business district and at the airport. Note that rather than hailing a cab, finding taxi stands at major shopping centers and businesses as well as calling for pick-ups via hotel concierge or phone is the norm in Hawaii.

Temporary Lodging Assistance (TLA)

Service Members arriving in Hawaii on TLA who elect to wait for on-post or off-post housing that will not be available for move-in until after 60 days of their arrival are authorized to receive up to 60 days of TLA. This is due to their personal choice to wait for something beyond that timeframe.

Service Members who sign a rental agreement with a tenancy start date within 60 days of arrival can request for a TLA extension if household goods cannot be delivered within the 60-day timeframe.

Service Members who have home purchase agreements with closing dates beyond the initial 60 days may request additional TLA until the closing date.

Bonafide Bachelors and Service Members who did not bring their dependents and are deploying with 60 days of arrival, are required to obtain a written memorandum from their commander or TCS orders to remain on TLA, and not required to search for housing until they deploy.

Service Members who redeploy and will be departing within 60 days are not required to search if they have PCS orders. They are eligible for interim TLA upon return.
